Architecture for Everyone (A4E) is a three year, UK wide campaign, founded on the belief that built environment professionals who reflect the diversity of the society they serve, have a better chance of creating a built environment that suits society.
By designing and delivering project components that reflect this, the campaign hopes to identify and support new and emerging architectural talent from amongst social groups that have been traditionally excluded from a career in the profession.
The campaign was initiated by the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and RMJM Architects and launched in 2008. The 2009 and 2010 Glasgow programmes were principally funded by the Scottish Government's Directorate for the Built Enviornment Architecture and Place Division and in 2010, co funded by Culture and Sport Glasgow and Creative Scotland (formerly Scottish Arts Council).
Architecture and Design Scotland were appointed to co-ordinate the 2010 workshop programme in Glasgow, working with a range of partners including Culture and Sport, Glasgow, Glasgow East End Arts Company (Platform in Easterhouse), Strathclyde University and the Mackintosh School of Architecture (The Glasgow School of Art). Workshops were facilitated with Stone Opera.
This year's national programme focussed on the theme of 'Our urban Playground' which looked at design for sport and leisure in urban settings. As well as introducing urban sports such as Parkour, participants visited the London Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games sites. The programme ended with a celebration at The Lighthouse, Glasgow, attended by participants from other Architecture for Everyone regional programmes from Liverpoool, Manchester, London and Sheffield.
Young people's designs from this year's Architecture for Everyone's national campaign will form a major part of the Urban Playground exhibition at The Lighthouse which opened in September 2010.
